Health Clearances
The Labrador Retriever Club sets the minimum necessary health clearances expected from reputable breeders of Labrador Retrievers. A dog must have these health clearances to receive a CHIC number from the Canine Health Information Center. Apollo has all of these clearances and more. His required clearances are all registered with the OFA (view registry) and his CHIC number is 165620.
ORTHOPEDIC EVALUATIONS:
The Labrador Retriever Club requires evaluation for hip and elbow dysplasia by the OFA. Radiographs of Apollo's hips and elbows were taken on November 4, 2021 and submitted to the OFA for evaluation.
Apollo's Results:
- Hips: Excellent (LR-258608E24M-VPI)
- This means he exhibits "superior conformation in comparison to other animals of the same age and breed."
- Elbows: Normal (LR-EL106688M24-VPI)
- This means he is free of elbow dysplasia (unlike hip evaluations, there are no grades for radiographically normal elbows).
OPHTHALMIC EVALUATION:
The Labrador Retriever Club requires an eye examination by a boarded ACVO Ophthalmologist. Apollo was evaluated by an ACVO veterinarian on November 4, 2021 and both eyes were Normal (LR-EYE23981/24M-VPI).
CARDIAC EVALUATION:
The Labrador Retriever Club recommends, but does not require, a cardiac examination. Apollo had a basic cardiac examination performed by a veterinarian on November 4, 2021 the result of which was Normal/Clear (LR-BCA897/24M/P-VPI).
DNA HEALTH TESTS:
The Labrador Retriever Club requires genetic testing for EIC and recommends testing for CNM and PRA-prcd. Apollo's DNA was tested by Embark which is a research partner of Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine. Embark also tests for a mutation in the POMC gene which is common in Labrador Retrievers and Flat Coated Retrievers. Dogs with one (ND) or two (DD) copies of this mutation are more prone to obesity. COAT COLOR GENETICS:
The Labrador Retriever Club requires genetic testing for the D Locus. See this LRC blog post for more information about dilute pigment in Labrador Retrievers. Although not required, genetic testing for the E and B Loci is useful for breeders to determine the possible coat colors of a dog's offspring. Jennifer Tucker and Billie Helwick judged the test. It was fun getting to see where Apollo's dad trained to become a Grand Hunting Retriever Champion.

Apollo passed his fourth HRC Started Hunt Test and earned his SHR title. Hidden Pines Hunting Retriever Association hosted the test at the Wyoming Hereford Ranch in Laramie County, Wyoming. LeeAnn Heldt and Kevin VanCleave judged the test. Getting that first title ribbon was very rewarding.

Shannon Stites and Barbara Eskam judged the test. It was a beautiful morning but we had to wait out a thunderstorm before Apollo got to run in the afternoon.

Marjorie Covey and Curt Lacey judged the test. It was a beautiful morning for the water series but a thunderstorm caused about an hour delay in the afternoon. Luckily, Apollo got to run the land series just before the delay.
